Bulawayo businessman, Mr John Tafara Madzikater, allegedly shot himself near his girlfriend’s home in Cowdray Park on Saturday evening.

According to sources, before the tragedy occurred, Mr. Madzikater was posting messages about death and suicide on his social media platforms.

Mr. MadzikaTyre, who owned a butchery at the KoChigumira Recreation Center in Luveve and in the northern suburb of Pumula, was found shot in the head outside his girlfriend’s home.

Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Mspile, Bulawayo provincial spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying investigations were ongoing.

“Police confirm the death of John Tafara Madzikater, who was found with a gunshot wound to the head. She added that the police are treating the case as a suicide and investigations are still ongoing.

According to people close to Mr Madzikater, two days before his death, he posted a disturbing message on his WhatsApp status: “If I leave this world you will not say I am a coward, it is better to call me a coward, I have no choice.”

A friend of Madzikataire, who declined to give his name, said that although the message appeared to hint at suicidal thoughts, it was not taken seriously.

“Sometimes people post messages that make it seem like they are suicidal, but we didn’t take it seriously. We don’t really know what happened, whether it was suicide or something else, but his WhatsApp messages were disturbing,” the friend said.

Workers at Samaz Butchery, one of Mr Madzikater’s companies, recall seeing their boss on Saturday around 5pm when he was delivering meat to the Love outlet in his black Mercedes Benz.

He was accompanied by a young woman who stayed in the car while he unloaded the meat.

“A friend of his has alerted us that he shot himself outside the woman’s home in Cowdray Park. We are still in disbelief that the president killed himself. The abattoirs will remain closed until we hear from the family,” said one staff member, who asked to remain anonymous.

The workers said that shortly after receiving news of their boss’s death, they quickly rented a Honda Fit and rushed to the scene, where they found police already present. The late businessman’s car was later parked outside the Loviv massacre after the police handed it over to the family.

It is believed Mr Madzikater was with his girlfriend when he shot himself. The friend was questioned by police and later released.

Police sources said that large sums of money were found at the scene of the shooting.

Mr Madzikater’s cause of death remains under investigation, but disturbing posts on social media have added to the mystery. Chronicle
