Some Zanu PF activists now say that pushing for a third term for President Mnangagwa would be tantamount to a repeat of the Mugabe debacle.
Mnangagwa loyalists have intensified their 2030 election campaign, with Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi revealing his ministry’s readiness to put forward the necessary constitutional amendments.
Bikita South MP Enerji Mutodi, a long-time ally of the president, admitted that he was behind a proposed parliamentary motion to extend Mnangagwa’s term for two years.
Mutodi’s proposal also includes extending the life of the current Parliament by two years.
A Zanu PF politburo member from Mashonaland Central was heard in an audio recording complaining that Mnangagwa’s term extension campaign was out of control.
In the recording obtained by The Standard, the official warned of a repeat of the unrest of 2017, when the military was forced to stage a coup and intervene in the battle to succeed President Robert Mugabe.
A senior Zanu PF official was heard saying: “The G40 issue came and you all know what happened and I tell you this is the way things start, if you see people start licking shoes like this is happening.”
“There is no region I do not know; I know all 101 political districts here. “I’m telling you, in everything that’s going on, never have people been asked to write resolutions that they want the president to govern through 2030.
“There has been no such decision from our Mount Darwin region. “We do not want a repeat of what happened in 2017, which led to the overthrow of Mugabe… Leave power when you still have the support of the people and the party.
“We must take a leaf from what happened to Mugabe. “We cannot repeat the same thing…”
In an interview with the Standard newspaper yesterday, Farai Marabira, director of information for the Zanu National Party, said that every member of the party is expected to support the decision to extend Mnangagwa’s term. standard
