Two policemen, who were caught on camera, allegedly taking bribes from motorists, appeared in court yesterday and were remanded in custody until November 11.
Sergeant James Chifamba (46) and Constable Tremor Mukunza (36) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Mahrewanazvu Gova to face charges of abusing their position as public servants.
State and defense counsel are expected to submit written submissions by tomorrow and judgment in the matter will be delivered on November 11.
Prosecutor Mr Aniso Chiringi alleged that the accused were last week deployed on duty to carry out traffic enforcement duties following the Mabvuku traffic lights along Mutare Road towards Harare.
The two had specific duties to stop vehicles and check for any violations.
Contrary to this assigned duty, the duo did not check violations, but instead filled their pockets with bribes from drivers who parked their cars.
The State claims they did so to show favoritism to the motorists involved, and in doing so acted contrary to their duties. Herald
The State claims to have evidence in the form of a video recording of the events of the day in question.
