Retired Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) Chief Marshal Elson Moyo has survived a car accident in a development that would have made him the latest statistic in a growing number of current and former military officers to have died in recent years.
According to a police intelligence report in possession of NewsDay, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Chigoto when Moyo was driving alone from his farm.
The report said he failed to negotiate a curve.
He added, “The vehicle deviated from the road to the right, collided with a tree and fell on its wheels.”
He was taken to Chigoto District Hospital and then airlifted to Harare for further treatment.
Moyo retired in March this year, in what critics say was triggered by a mid-air bomb scare, which led to President Emmerson Mnangagwa canceling a landing at Victoria Falls International Airport. The president’s private plane had to return to Harare.
Mnangagwa later appointed Air Vice Marshal John Jacob Nzvedi as the new AFZ commander.
Last month, retired Lieutenant General Engelbert Rugege also escaped death when his car’s tires exploded while he was driving at night. The incident occurred in Mount Pleasant, Harare.
