The government has been directed by Zanu PF to rename the country’s provinces and rid them of divisive colonial names.

The decision was reached during the 21st annual Zanu-PF National People’s Congress, which concluded in Bulawayo on Saturday.

“Regarding the legacy of the liberation war, the party directs the government to accelerate the renaming of provinces and do away with colonial names that divide the nation,” Legal Secretary, Commander Patrick Chinamasa said.

Historian Mithembi Hadebe praised the ruling party for its decision, saying it was long overdue. “The naming of provinces was part of the divide and rule policy followed by the colonists. It was a program aimed at making people not see themselves as outside their race.

“Changing the names of the provinces will create national pride rather than making people think only about their ethnicity. This is a welcome development that I believe is long overdue,” Mr. Hadibi said.

He said even the implementation of national projects would have buy-in from every Zimbabwean as it would be inclusive in nature and promote national heritage.

Hadibi said the renaming of provinces should be accompanied by a review of the country’s educational curricula and addressing historical misconceptions.

When the colonists settled in the country, they named provinces along ethnic lines, with the southern parts of the country being called Matabeleland largely because Ndebele speakers controlled the regions while the northern parts were called Mashonaland as the Shona ethnic groups controlled the regions.
