The government says it is working on a comprehensive response plan to the disaster in Mbare, where the traders’ market was leveled.

Minister of Women, Community and Small and Medium Enterprises Development Monica Mutsvangwa has expressed concern over the loss suffered by traders at the Mbare Traders Market when a fire destroyed their goods worth millions of dollars on Tuesday evening.

Minister Mutsvangwa said initial assessments indicated that the fire caused extensive damage to the market, destroying the entire retail section and parts of the wholesale market.

“This has had a profound impact on the lives of about 4,695 traders who operate more than 1,565 tables and rely on this market as their primary source of income,” she said.

Minister Mutsvangwa said the tragedy had negatively affected not only traders, but also suppliers and other players in the value chains that support the market.
