Teachers who say they are mired in poverty are demanding a minimum wage of US$1,260 per month.
Zimbabwe Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union said “The employer must review salaries and pay a fair wage that enables teachers to meet the basics and provide savings. A minimum of $1,260 is all teachers ask for.
“Every employee has the right to engage in collective action, including the right to strike, picket, withdraw their work and take other similar coordinated actions, but the exercise of this right may be restricted by law in order to maintain essential services.
“The Public Service Act should be harmonized in a way that protects the right to strike. Job actions by education administrators should be protected.
The union said, “The culture of persecuting teachers for starting work contradicts the spirit of the national constitution.”
