President Emmerson Mnangagwa says any country aiming to modernize must adopt the latest technologies.
As the world embraces new technologies, electric cars are becoming more popular and are being promoted as an alternative to those that use fossil fuels.
Many companies around the world now manufacture these cars, including Build Your Dreams (BYD) Auto, which is headquartered in Shenzhen, China.
On Monday, BYD Harare branch handed over an electric truck to President Mnangagwa at State House. Company officials took the president through the missions of ten vehicles.
For President Mnangagwa, any country that aspires to development must adopt such technologies.
“A developing country and a country that wants to modernize embraces the latest technologies. Zimbabwe is one of the countries in the region that has the desire to modernize and this is the journey,” the President said.
Africa Electric Vehicle Centre, the parent company of Build YourDreams Auto in Zimbabwe, CEO, Dr Patrick Masocha, said there was a need for more incentives in terms of importing vehicles to ensure they are easily accessible to ordinary Zimbabweans.
“We have been selling since 2019, and the nice thing is that they are all electric. The challenges we face in terms of importing fuel, once we have that, we will be gone.”
During his recent visit to China, President Mnangagwa visited BYD Automotive headquarters in Shenzhen where he was introduced to their latest range of cars. zbc
