The mysterious bus that had been parked for years on the Harare-Nyamabanda Expressway in Mutoko South has burned down.
The bus was parked in the area, near the Magaya turnoff, but it remains intact despite the thieves’ attempts to steal the bus. Any attempts to steal its parts were unsuccessful, leading the villagers to conclude that it was a mysterious machine.
On a sweltering September afternoon, mysterious flames erupted from inside the bus, engulfing it in a fiery shroud, Newsday reported. A cloud of smoke could be seen from as far away as the center of Murehwa.
Onlookers from nearby homes gathered at the scene in awe. “What caused the fire?” they asked themselves as they watched, transfixed, as the metal skin of the bus twisted and melted, releasing secrets and mysteries into the smoke-filled air.
“I saw a cloud of smoke and realized the bus was on fire,” recalls villager Verlon Sijok.
“We don’t know what caused the fire. It’s a mystery. Everything about this bus is a mystery. It has survived theft and vandalism all these years, only to be destroyed by a fire like this.
The bus bound for Malawi, made by Volvo, suffered a breakdown in 2019 and efforts to repair it were unsuccessful.
