ROBBERS STILL ON THE RUN newsdzeZimbabweNewsdzeZimbabwe

One of the seven armed robbers who boldly seized three boxes containing a staggering $4,442,000 – believed to be the largest heist of a local bank – calmly surveyed the crime scene from a street corner opposite the financial institution.

In an act of brazenness that stunned the nation, he carelessly bought gum from a vendor before running to the bank to pull off a daring mid-afternoon stunt, which lasted just 149 seconds, The Chronicle reports.

The robbery happened at the Ecobank on the corner of Fife Street and Ninth Avenue at around 3.30pm on Thursday.

Without warning, he ran toward the bank and immediately helped another armed man subdue one of the security guards, who was armed with a rifle and standing in the back of a Safeguard vehicle. All this happened in the blink of an eye while the saleswoman who sold the stolen gum looked at her in disbelief. Gum costs R1.

“He bought gum but didn’t say anything to me. He kept looking everywhere and then suddenly ran towards the bank. When I looked to see why he was running, I saw him struggling with one of the security guards.

“Everything happened very quickly. When I saw the weapons, I took my things and ran in the opposite direction. In a very short period of time, the white car sped away, turned left at the traffic light, and disappeared,” said the saleswoman, who asked to remain anonymous.

The Ford Ranger single cab car sped along Fife Street toward 10th Avenue. In addition to the money taken by the armed robbers, the suspects also stole three rifles belonging to the security company. Police identified the weapons as two pistols and a rifle.
