The Applied Genetics Testing Center (AGTC) of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has conducted more than 10,000 paternity tests, representing at least a thousand tests per year since 2014.

Head of the Center for Applied Genetic Testing at NUST, Mr Zephaniah Dlamini, said in an interview with the Chronicle: “It has been 10 years since AGTC opened and we have conducted over 10,000 paternity tests as well as over 500 human forensic tests to identify individuals who have been burned beyond recognition or dismembered in road accidents, aircraft accidents or fires.”

He also said that some of the university’s achievements were showcased during the recent 2024 Presidential Innovation Expo awards ceremony in Harare, which President Mnangagwa presided over last month.

“At the 2024 Presidential Innovation Show Awards, our innovations were judged by a panel of judges and we won in two categories as AGTC. The first category we won was the Best Presidential Innovator Award, which is a grand prize worth $50,000. We also won the The best innovative university.
