The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Service has defended the killing of a problematic elephant at Victoria Falls.
Zimparks spokeswoman Tinashe Farao said “Yes, there was an incident where an elephant was killed, and human life was threatened and this is normal within our wildlife control procedures. I don’t know how they came to the conclusion that this elephant had three young calves.
“You know we don’t use emotions when we deal with these things. We deal with facts.” The fact still remains that when human life is in danger, this is how we react and we do not apologize. I think it’s not right for people to invoke their feelings about controlling problem animals.
“When human life is threatened, we respond, that is what our policy and legislation says, and that is what we did. “How do they prove that this is an elephant calf that was eliminated, they are just playing.”
The government recently announced that it plans to cull 200 elephants to feed those affected by the ongoing drought.
