The bus crew and passengers were arrested after police seized about 62 kilograms of mbangi.
The cannabis was found in bags hidden in the chassis of a Yutong bus on the Masvingo-Pittbridge route. Two bus crew members and two passengers were arrested.
The Herald reported that the bus initially failed to stop after being stopped by police at a checkpoint along the highway, leading to a road chase that forced the bus driver, Tondray Mafu (48), to stop.
Police claimed they searched the bus and found six bags containing 28 wrapped packets of marijuana hidden inside the bus body.
Ma’afu was arrested and the bus was directed to Masvingo Central Police Station.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Diwa, said further searches of the bus at the police station led to the recovery of a black bag from a passenger, Paulina Mudakowaka (36) from Ruwa, Harare, containing several packets of mbangi.
During the search, police also found four rolls of dagga bread inside a black plastic bag belonging to another passenger, Alice Mutanda (68) of Glen View, Harare.
Inspector Dhwa said police have also arrested the bus driver, Allen Mbirekonashe (25) from Victoria Ranch suburb in Masvingo, in connection with the Mbangi smuggling operation.
“We arrested the four suspects after receiving information from members of the public and we will continue to intensify the war against drugs until we make our society drug-free,” Inspector Dahwa said.
