A 30-year-old Namibian woman, who was detained by South African police in Gauteng at OR Tambo International Airport following a tip-off, released more than 100 capsules of cocaine from her stomach.

After all the drugs were removed from her system, the Namibian woman was taken to a detention centre and is expected to appear before Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

South African police said a follow-up medical examination, including X-rays, confirmed that the Namibian woman who took the anesthetic bullets before landing in South Africa had released all the prohibited substances.

The alleged drug dealer arrested on Sunday is the tenth drug lord to be arrested at Gauteng’s busy OR Tambo International Airport in the past two months.

In an update on Monday evening, national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlinda Mathe said all the drugs had been removed from the Namibian drug dealer’s body.

“The drug dealer shot 68 bullets of drugs from her body. The drugs weighed an estimated 850 grams. She has been taken to a detention centre and is expected to appear in Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with drug dealing and possession,” Mathie said.

She said additional fees may be added at a later stage.

Mathe said on Sunday that officials from the South African Police, Customs and Immigration Department of the South African Revenue Service were following up on intelligence from the South African Police about a drug shipment arriving from Sao Paulo at around 7 a.m.

“The team immediately intercepted the drug dealer as she was making her way through immigration. She was immediately arrested and taken to a local hospital where medical X-rays confirmed the presence of foreign objects in her stomach,” Mathi said.

She said at the time that the process of removing the suspected drugs from her body was underway.

Meanwhile, the National Commissioner of the South African Police, General Fanny Masemola, has commended the vigilance of the multidisciplinary team that is working tirelessly to eradicate crime at OR Tambo International Airport.
