A Harare police officer has been convicted after selling a customer’s car. The car was given to Simbarashe Ndungwa to repair but he sold it instead.
The judge said the state had proved its case. He is expected to be sentenced today. The court heard that between December 2023 and January 29, 2024, the complainant gave Ndongwa his Toyota Hiace for repairs. He later sold it to Tashinga Chukwu without the complainant’s knowledge.
The complainant made several efforts to contact Ndungwa. However, all his efforts were in vain. On 14 February 2024, Ndungwa was arrested by police detectives from the Vehicle Theft Squad of the Harare Criminal Investigation Department. The accused was questioned and was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for the whereabouts of the vehicle.
He was also unable to produce a sales agreement with the complainant. Ndungwa then voluntarily led investigators to recover a Toyota Hiace from Chukwu. The total value of the stolen vehicle was $3,500 and was recovered.
