Businessmen Musa Mpofu and Mike Chimombi, who face charges of fraud worth more than $7 million, are due to be released on Tuesday next week.
The state based its case on evidence from two witnesses from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission in its bid to oppose the duo’s bail application.
The state says the two pose a flight risk and could escape the court’s jurisdiction. Another argument is that the two are likely to interfere with witness testimony.
But the defense argues the men have nothing to hide and deserve to be free until trial. The state will file its written submissions on Thursday, and the defense is expected to respond on Friday.
The state alleges that Mpofu and Chimombe falsified documents to ensure their company qualified for the tender to supply goats under the Presidential Goat Scheme, a tender the company eventually won.
The couple were paid more than $7 million but failed to deliver the goats. ZBC
