A CCC activist from Guvamatanga village, ward 35 in Gutu Central, appeared in court facing charges of assaulting the village headman who refused him food assistance from the Social Welfare Department.
Wilson Guvamatanga spent Wednesday night in cells at Gutu police station and was released yesterday by a local magistrate.
He is alleged to have assaulted Takakurumbira Guvamatanga who is also his uncle.
The allegations also indicate that Ward 35 Councillor Benson Kurawoni Dendera has been going around forcing village chiefs to refuse to give food to opposition members, and at one point, the former interim village chief, Gutu, Amon Masanganisi, was forced to say enough.
Masanganizi made sure that everyone present got their share of the social food assistance.
Guvamatanga denies assault charges.
The sources said the elderly village chief fell after trying to assault Guvamatanga and sustained some wounds to his mouth. The food distribution was taking place at Chimunzuwa shops near Chamisa Primary School.
Guvamatanga is represented by lawyer Martin Muriri of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).
