Zimbagwe Ward 7 opposition councilor Simbarashe Hlabati has dragged a ZANU-PF member to court on charges of collecting US$800 from desperate villagers to pay for transporting maize meant for drought relief.
Hlabati accuses proportional representation councilor Rita Masiambiri and social welfare officials J. Guvira, Mukundo, Thomas Ncube and Traimur Honi of collusion and refusing to use free transportation provided by the former to transport the maize.
Al-Halbati demands that an order be issued preventing the five from participating in the distribution of aid in the neighborhood and that the money they paid be returned to the villagers. He also wants to conduct an investigation into the accused.
Drought relief is provided to the villagers at no cost as the beneficiaries have no money including food.
The court application was filed in the Kwekwe Civil Court under Case No. KkGL 163/24.
Al-Halbati says that, as the district councilor, he secured a truck from a benefactor to transport the grains to the ward, but the respondents rejected the offer and chose a rented truck.
“On May 2, 2024, Halbati and Mokozo (applicants) testified that Respondents collected US$800 from Drought Relief Program beneficiaries.
“This is an application to restrain defendants 1 to 6 from unilaterally taking over the grain distribution operation in the future and also for the honorable court to compel the defendants to refund the money they collected from the beneficiaries.
“The applicants also seek an order restraining Juvira and Mukondo (Social Development Officers) from supervising food aid in the future and also an order to the relevant authority in terms of the constitutional mandate to initiate investigations into the job description of Social Development Officers,” the court said. to request.
