A young woman has been convicted of selling her child in South Africa. The 23-year-old woman from Gokwi claimed that her baby died. She pleaded guilty to contravening the Trafficking in Persons Act before a magistrate in Harare. She will be sentenced today.
The court heard that the woman gave birth in South Africa in June last year and sold her son two days later. One of the accomplices managed to smuggle the child to Zimbabwe. But she was arrested after a tip-off and the child was placed under the care of the Social Welfare Department.
When the new mother heard of the arrest, she returned home to claim the baby. She was then arrested and dragged to court.
