There is no change in Kwekwe City public toilets in the CBD and at the Mbizo 2 farmers market despite instructions from Minister Owen Ncube in February to immediately rectify the problems.
The issue was hotly debated on Thursday at a full council meeting with councilors questioning why the administration was not paying attention to the problems of public toilets in Kwekwe being clogged and unusable.
Residents use the bush, which poses a serious health risk.
After receiving public outcry, Ncube instructed the council to address the problems immediately.
“What is delaying the process of having functional public toilets? Because we are not safe,” Councilor Sizwe Ncube said during a full council meeting on Thursday.
City Mayor Albert Zinhanga called on the administration to conduct a comprehensive inspection of all public toilets and make the necessary repairs. In response, City Clerk, Dr Lucia Mkandhla, called for immediate action to address the situation.
“This is an urgent matter, the situation is unacceptable because we have allocated plumbers for this work and we need to find out why there is no progress,” Mkandla said.
Director of Works Engineer John Mickey informed the city fathers that his department had not been informed of the purchase of materials needed for the work.
“I heard just now that materials have been purchased because we couldn’t do anything without the necessary materials,” Mikey said.
Dr Solomon Matsa, one of the councillors, has offered his plot of land to build toilets in the CBD. Masvingo mirror
