A 15-year-old girl from Block 4 of Inkosi Farm committed suicide on Sunday, after virginity tests at the church showed that she was no longer a virgin.
On May 4, 2024, Tariro Sfekiro went with her mother to the African Apostolic Church. A church prophetess named Madzimai Chigora predicted that the girl was no longer a virgin and she denied it.
It is alleged that a virginity test was forced on her and the result was that her hymen was no longer intact and she was therefore subjected to sexual intercourse.
The girl then allegedly revealed that she had slept with two different boys who had the same title as the prophetess and could therefore be her relatives.
Mashonaland East Police spokesperson Simon Chazovaci confirmed the incident to The Mirror. He urged people to follow procedures regarding such matters, and urged parents to stay close to their children.
After the church service, the girl went home with her mother but was depressed. The next day, her mother found her lying on the ground in a critical condition, and her son told her that the girl had drank poison.
She was rushed to Chivu General Hospital where she died on admission.
“We appeal to members of the public to seek counseling services in such situations. I also urge parents to be very close to their children so that they feel free to disclose everything to them,” said Chazovasheyi, Masvingo Mirror.
