gImasco, the country’s largest ferrochrome producer, today laid off more than 200 workers from its various subsidiaries across the country, sources told The Mirror.

Those demobilized belong to Muturashanga, Shurugwe, Harare and Kwekwe.

In the compulsory redundancy notice written to each worker and seen by The Mirror, the company does not offer any package and gives workers May 31, 2024, as their last day of work. However, the workers will not report for duty from tomorrow, according to the notice.

Zemasco Chief Operating Officer Namatai Mapfumo could not be reached for comment.

Mirror understands that the workers refused to sign the rebate letters in the absence of any mention of the parcels and short notice.

Workers’ Committee Chairman Davison Panganay said he was not at work and was not aware of the matter.

Zemasko said the cuts were caused by weak prices on the international market and other challenges.

“In addition to the summary recently provided to you by the Executive Chairman, the Company hereby advises that your position has been made redundant through the restructuring and has been declared redundant to the immediate requirements of the Company. “You have been placed on the compulsory redundancy list, which operations commence with immediate effect “, reads part of the notice.
