Thieves broke into St Gerard’s Catholic Church in Borrowdale and stole an undisclosed sum of cash in the early hours of yesterday.
In a statement, the head of the church and parish priest, Father Mark Ciccone, said that the thieves stormed the church building, broke into the parish office, blew up the safes and seized the money that was kept there before conducting banking transactions.
“Between 01:30 and 0200 this morning we heard sounds of explosions in our compound.
“These perpetrators also entered the main church through the crying room and broke into the parish priest’s office, the sacristy and the altar server’s room. They desecrated the sacred rooms, turning things upside down most likely in search of more money.”
Father Ciccone said that no one was hurt, including the guard who was on patrol.
He said the church’s financial council was now working hard to enhance security and urged the public to support them in any way possible.
