The Dzivaresekwa man, who formerly worked as a security guard, appeared in court last week on charges of robbery for allegedly escaping with his 2020-issued pistol. He then gave it to his brother who sold it to a friend.
Tinashe Sibanda (25) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Denis Mangosi.
It is alleged that on 22 December 2020, Sibanda, who worked for Professional Security in Harare, was stationed at CABS Bank at First Street Mall. While on duty, he used a .38 Taurus pistol, which he took with him after finishing his shift. When he did not return to work, follow-ups were carried out, but Sibanda was not located.
On March 23 this year, CID Homicide investigators received information that Sibanda was at his former workplace and they reacted quickly to arrest him.
When interviewed, Sibanda told investigators that he gave his brother, Phineas Sibanda, the firearm as a gift. The police tracked down Phineas, leading to his arrest.
Phineas told investigators that he sold the firearm to Thomas Nyakabau who lives in Goromonzi.
Meanwhile, a Glen Nora See man has appeared before the same judge facing two charges of disorderly conduct after allegedly assaulting and attempting to disarm a security guard at the Munhumutapa building in central Harare.
Andrew Sewer (35) has been remanded in custody awaiting a bail application and sentencing.
The complainants, who were not named in court papers, were members of a police support unit.
In the case of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on 23 April, at approximately 12.03pm, two police officers were on guard duty at the Munhumutapa building and armed with AK 47 assault rifles.
Sewer asked an officer for directions to the Chief Justice’s Office and was duly directed. Suddenly, Sewer grabbed the butt of one of the assault rifles but failed to disarm the officer. He started running towards the NSSA building.
Both officers chased and arrested Sewer, who allegedly punched one of them in the face. The two were eventually able to subdue and arrest Sewyer with the help of members of the public.
