
Six minors were among 16 accident victims who died in an accident in Beatrice, 52 kilometers along the Harare-Masvingo highway, on Friday.
Fifteen people died instantly on Friday, while another, who was admitted to Chitungwiza Central Hospital, died yesterday.
The accident occurred when a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter passenger bus carrying 44 passengers, all members of the Angels Family Apostolic Church, collided head-on with a transport truck.
Yesterday, the police published the names of the deceased minors.
They are Elisha Jack (6), Elijah Jack (5), Ezra Jack (1), Leroy Kiddo (8), Lloyd Kiddo (4), and Kelly Quinda (3), all from Epworth.
The deceased are Joyce Mudzonwa (44), Prudence Mahachi (31), Tallent Rangwa (23) and Elmud Ncube (18), all from Overspiel in Epworth; The decision is Maizivi (26) from Madhu village, Buhera.
Police say the remaining victims have not yet been identified by their relatives.
In a statement yesterday, National Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “Police investigations established that the accident occurred after an Adolf transport truck without passengers, which was heading towards Harare, collided with a Volkswagen Polo from behind.
“The Volkswagen Polo was heading towards Harare without passengers. As a result, the transport truck veered off the road into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a Mercedes Benz Sprinter which was heading towards Chivu with 44 passengers on board.
“The passengers were members of the Angels Apostolic Family Church and were on their way to Makomomavi Shrine in Chivo,” he said.
Assistant Comm Nyathi urged motorists to be vigilant on the roads and observe the stipulated speed limits.
“Above all, we call on drivers to adhere to the rules and regulations of the road to protect human life.”
The bodies of the victims were sent to Shivu General Hospital for autopsy. Sunday mail
