A man from Domboshava set fire to his wife after they had a dispute over the division of marital property.
Ashely Kabaya is facing murder charges after Spywe Junior died from injuries sustained in the attack.
The court heard that the incident occurred on April 15 when the couple decided to share their property when their divorce was finalized.
Kabaya closed the door from the inside and attacked Junior with a golf club.
He proceeded to soak her body in a mixture of cobra venom and paraffin before setting it on fire.
As Junior was overwhelmed by the flames, she fought back and caught Kabaya in the process.
He was seriously injured and is currently in hospital.
The wife screamed for help, and a passerby heard the noise, broke down the door and tried to extinguish the fire with the help of other community members who gathered at the scene.
The two victims were immediately taken to Makumbi Hospital in Domboshava and, given the severity of the burns, were transferred to Parirenyatwa for specialist care.
Spiwi died last Wednesday in Parilinyatwa.
