30 ILLEGAL MALAWIANS ARRESTED IN MBARE newsdzeZimbabweNewsdzeZimbabwe

Thirty Malawians were arrested yesterday in the Mbare suburb of Harare after failing to produce relevant documents.

They were taken to Harare Central Police Station for further investigation.

Police confirmed the arrests in a sting operation following a tip-off.

Assistant National Police Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “Thirty foreign nationals were arrested in an operation carried out by police in Mbare after receiving information.”

He added that full details of the arrest would be published today.

Foreign citizens must have valid documents to stay in Zimbabwe legally.

If the foreigner cannot prove that they have a legal document to remain in Zimbabwe, they may be arrested and prosecuted for entering the country illegally.

Most foreigners arrested in the country attempt to cross into South Africa illegally as cases of human trafficking continue to rise.

Zimbabwe is a major transit corridor for African migrants trying to reach South Africa, the main economy on the continent, in search of asylum.

Over the past years, a police crackdown on foreign nationals has been sparked by numerous cases of human trafficking and border crossing assistance by bus operators, villagers and other unscrupulous officials.

Trafficking in foreigners is a big and dangerous business in most southern African countries.

There are known individuals and business leaders who kidnap foreigners and demand ransoms of up to R80,000 per person.

Some foreigners come from as far away as Somalia and Ethiopia and use Zimbabwe and Beitbridge as a means of transit to South Africa. Announce
