Serious absenteeism has reportedly hit Harare City Council (HCC) amid reports of workers failing to turn up for work due to late payment of salaries, NewsDay reports.
Zimbabwe Water and Allied Workers Union president Themba Musarwa yesterday told NewsDay that his association, which represents workers in all local authorities across Zimbabwe, is mired in disciplinary cases involving absenteeism at the city council.
“We have attended hearings for our workers accused of absenteeism. We represent the workers, but this is all caused by late payment of salaries, but the employer [HCC] “He doesn’t know all this,” he said.
“Some workers went to Easter holiday without salaries, and now we are going to Independence holiday. How do they survive?
Musarwa said some council workers were walking long distances to get to work.
“We have also been told that our employer is failing to transact due to the new currency, and that workers are failing to pay rents on time,” he said.
Mosarroa recently accused the city fathers of neglecting workers, saying many were afraid to retire due to lack of savings due to poor salaries.
However, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume blamed the harsh economic environment facing the country for the development.
“As you know, we are experiencing a difficult economic environment but we are trying hard to pay our workers on time,” he said. Newsday
