A fire broke out in a shop in Chinhoyi’s central business district last night, destroying its wares including electrical items and furniture, leaving shop and stall owners counting their losses.
It is suspected that an electrical short caused the fire that destroyed televisions, radios and fans among other things.
The Chinhoyi municipal fire team, working with community members, was able to extinguish the fire but the goods could not be saved.
Witnesses said that the fire started when everyone in the store closed its doors and went home.
A man at the scene said: “We initially noticed some smoke coming out of the closed store before the fire shattered the window glass.”
“Two fire engines arrived but there was a technical malfunction which delayed the process of putting out the fire. The community, including promoters, had to intervene,” he declares.
