Five armed men broke into a house in the suburb of Chichudzi near the Ha Mangava shopping center in Beitbridge and stole money and mobile phones before killing one of the occupants.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the gang, urging anyone with information to contact the nearest police station. The gang allegedly fled the crime scene in a car. National Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident occurred on Thursday and police would soon arrest the gang. “I want to assure the public that we are pursuing the suspects and will bring them all to trial soon. The law will take its course.”
Assistant Comm Nyathi said that on Wednesday night, the victim and his family had taken to bed and locked all the doors.
At approximately two o’clock in the morning, the five men opened the main door with iron bars.
“The gang forcefully opened the back door of the house using iron bars and broke the door of the bedroom where the deceased’s child was sleeping at about 2am on Thursday,” Assistant Comm Nyathi said.
“They took a mobile phone from the first man and demanded money and got US$200. They then moved to another bedroom and took US$600 and R300 from another complainant.
Then they shot at the door of the room where the deceased was sleeping and forced it open. The deceased tried to fight with the attackers but was overpowered and hit twice on the forehead with an iron rod. The gang raided the house, took 6,500 riyals and three mobile phones and fled.
“As they were leaving the house, one of the suspects shot the deceased twice after he tried to stand up and eventually fell to the ground and died. Assistant Comm Nyathi said the man was shot in the chest and stomach. Announce
