They quickly pledged to support President Mnangagwa’s call for more than US$2 billion to address the El Niño-induced drought that led to a nationwide state of disaster declaration yesterday.
Speaking about the declaration of a state of disaster in Zimbabwe, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Edward Kallon, said that the United Nations will assist Zimbabwe in mobilizing the required resources.
The announcement was made by President Mnangagwa after assessing the support needed to overcome the effects of drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon.
The United Nations has acknowledged the severe impact of the ongoing drought in Zimbabwe and southern Africa.
“The United Nations pledges to support the Government of Zimbabwe in mobilizing resources to address El Niño-induced drought, and efforts are currently underway to finalize a response plan that focuses on food security, health, education, shelter and other key areas to meet the needs of populations affected by the crisis.
“This crisis has far-reaching consequences across sectors such as food and nutrition security, health, water resources, education and livelihoods, highlighting the urgency of the situation,” he said.
Mr. Kallon said that the United Nations stressed the importance of strengthening efforts to build resilience and climate adaptation to address the effects of such extreme weather events and combat the overall climate crisis.
He said the United Nations recognizes the efforts of the Government of Zimbabwe and those of humanitarian partners for proactive planning and early actions to strengthen community resilience.
Mr Kallon said that the UN, as part of its national proactive action and early response, had so far allocated US$5 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCERF) in December last year.
The sectors targeted with the allocations provided included water, hygiene, sanitation, health, including cholera outbreak response, protection, as well as agriculture, food security and nutrition. Announce
