Police say they are not aware of community reports linking an alleged rape to four Zimbabwean fugitives who escaped from Mahalapye prison on Sunday.

To date, the Botswana Prison Service (BPS) has not been able to re-arrest the men; Last Ndlovu (27), Thabani Moyo (36), Abraham Sibanda (26) and Godfrey Moyo (29). In an interview with Mmegi Online, Oagile Kojane, Chief Superintendent and Public Relations Officer (PRO) said since their escape, they had no idea where the prisoners might be. “Our officers are still following up on this matter and we are not aware of any reports circulating on social media. We have not carried out any recovery operation yet since their escape,” Kogane revealed.

Kojani also stressed that the officers assigned to re-arrest the four prisoners were highly competent. He appealed to members of the public to cooperate with officers to return the escaped prisoners to Mmiji Prison
