The two security guards who stole $53,000 from a Qwest Financial Services crime scene were sentenced to 24 months in prison yesterday.

Cornelius Mushikang and Nisbert Kachongwe pleaded guilty to the crime on Monday before Judge Ethel Chichira.

They were initially sentenced to 48 months’ imprisonment, six of which were suspended on the condition that they do not commit an offense involving theft and breach of trust, in the following five years.

They were suspended for eighteen months on the condition that they each repay $18,650 to Quest Financial Services.

The two thieves attended the scene as part of reaction teams called in during the robbery of Quest Financial Services where $710,000 was stolen.

they Parked at the front of the building.

During their escape, the gang of robbers left a grinder, some detonators, a bag containing two laptops, dropped cash and fled out the back of the office.

While they were outside the building, one of the paper bags the robbers were using to transport the money tore and all the cash fell to the ground and the robbers escaped without picking it up.

The duo patrolled the area and found cash amounting to about US$53,000, which they took and divided among themselves.

Harare Homicide Department investigators last Friday received information that vigilantes had stolen money dropped by thieves at the scene.
