TWO GUARDS PLEAD GUILTY TO STEALING US$53K newsdzeZimbabweNewsdzeZimbabwe

Two security guards who were part of the response team at Quest Financial Services in Belgravia during the $720,000 robbery on February 25 yesterday pleaded guilty to stealing $53,000 and will return to court today for sentencing.

Cornelius Mushikanji (35) and Nisbert Kachongwe (35) of J and P Security Company appeared before Harare magistrate, Ms Ethel Chishira, facing a charge of illegally seizing US$53,000 dropped by robbers who fled the crime scene.

They split the money, with Mochikanji buying a Nissan Sylphy sedan for US$3,700 and a condo platform for US$6,000 in Eastview, Harare.

He also used US$2,500 to pay lobola to his in-laws.

Kachungwe bought a Nissan AD for US$6,100 using his share of the spoils plus US$1,000 worth of building materials.

The complainant in this case is Daniel Mandezvidza (54), chief operating officer of Quest Financial Services.

On February 25, at around 1.30am, 12 robbers armed with a gun, a drill, an iron bar, a nail cutter and explosives approached Mandzvidza after smashing down his bedroom door in one of the buildings at his workplace.

They tied him up before ransacking several offices.

They used tasers to open a safe in the operations manager’s office and stole cash worth US$720,000, €120 and R10,500, which they loaded into plastic bags and a cardboard box.

The thieves were alarmed by the arrival of response teams from Safeguard Security Company and J and P Security Service.

The court heard that the pair were parked in front of the building.

During their escape, the robbers left a grinder, some detonators and a bag containing two laptop computers and dropped $5,000 worth of cash into the building before escaping using the back of the building.

While they were outside the building, one of the plastic bags the robbers were carrying was torn and all the cash fell to the ground.

The thieves fled without taking the money.

Mushikanji and Kachongwe found cash amounting to about US$53,000 and split it.

On March 8, investigators from the Harare Homicide Criminal Investigation Department received information that the pair had stolen money dropped by thieves at the crime scene and arrested the two in central Harare.

On March 7, six adult males approached Mushikanji, claiming to be police officers, and took the remainder of his money, amounting to US$15,000.

The same fake CID officers stole US$7,000 from Kachungwe.

Of the $53,000 stolen, only $15,700 was recovered.
