Preparations for the Zimbabwe National Liberation Veterans Association conference to elect new national executive members are now at an advanced stage, a senior official said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the National Executive Meeting of the War Veterans Association in Harare yesterday, ZNLWVA spokesperson CD Douglas Mahia said all positions would be contested.
“We have a national executive meeting today (yesterday) that will discuss a number of issues such as the elective conference, veterans’ welfare, land issues, school fees for children of veterans,” Cde Mahiya said.
He said that the conference will be held in accordance with the statute of the association.
“We want to ensure that the elections are held peacefully in accordance with the Constitution. As the current spokesperson of the Assembly, I will be relinquishing my position in the Congress to make room for others to take over. We are making a lot of efforts to ensure that the elections are held this year. It will happen. We are “It is in an advanced stage to hold the conference.”
The last conference was held in 2013 in Masvingo where the current president Cde Chris Mutsvangwa was elected.
Regarding social welfare, the Veterans Wing appeals to the government to establish health clinics for veterans across the country.
Cde Mahiya said the war veterans wing has initiated a health program to ensure that ex-combatants have access to medicine in their areas.
“We are seeking government intervention to establish fully equipped health facilities for veterans across the country,” he said.
Cde Mahiya also called for the need to protect lands designated for war veterans which are now under threat.
