A South African citizen who was arrested by police at Robert Mugabe International Airport after being found in possession of five live bullets in his luggage was yesterday fined US$300 (or three months in prison).
Kwan Reid Govender (25) pleaded guilty to illegal possession of ammunition when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo. The five rounds were confiscated to the state.
Govender works at Wiremit Private Limited, Zimbabwe, as General Manager.
Prosecutor Ms Berlinda Shimuka told the court that at around 12.50pm on Friday, Govender arrived at Robert Gabriel International Airport with the intention of boarding an Airlink flight to South Africa.
He was carrying a blue bag and a black bag. When he placed his luggage on the screening machine, the machine detected five live ammunition rounds.
This was reported to the police and his luggage was physically searched leading to his arrest and the recovery of 5.45 live rounds in one of the pockets of his bag.
The Governor did not have a valid firearms certificate or any legal authority to obtain the ammunition in contravention of the provisions of the law. Detective Constable Madi from Harare Homicide CID conducted the investigation. Announce
