Opposition politician Nelson Chamisa has distanced himself from any political party after resigning as head of the Citizens Alliance for Change in January.
Chamisa was responding to a High Court application brought by Singiso Chabangu, the self-proclaimed interim CCC secretary-general, on behalf of the party seeking a court order to force Chamisa’s alleged allies to vacate the CCC’s Bulawayo offices.
Chabangu claims Chamisa sent his agents to paint the CCC Bulawayo offices blue, following speculation that the former CCC leader was forming another political party with blue as its main colour.
In his founding affidavit, Chabangu said: “They have already confirmed that a group of unidentified persons comprising about 25 to 30 persons, male and female, besieged the applicant’s regional offices in Bulawayo located at No. 41 Fort Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenue in Bulawayo which she claims was sent by The defendant (Chamisa) and in furthering his interests, forcibly took over the occupation, control and possession of the plaintiff’s offices.
But Chamisa said the request was frivolous.
“I am not currently affiliated with any movement, group or political party,” Chamisa said.
“I did not direct, request or encourage anyone to take over the premises referred to by the applicant in the corporate affidavit attributed to me. I resigned from my position as commander of the applicant and, since that resignation, I have not physically been to Bulawayo.
“I have absolutely no connection with the applicant. If there is anyone in the profession, the submitter of the institutional affidavit knows who it is and that it is not me. The applicant should prosecute those people if they exist, instead of harassing me.
He accused Chamisa Chabangu of using the courts to gain importance.
“My image and name have been taken over by many people who have nothing to do with me,” he said.
“Indeed, the irony of the application is that since my resignation as leader of the Citizens Alliance for Change, the applicant and the filer of the institutional affidavit have continued to use my face on their preferred logo. I would like to reiterate that I have no particular association with any color or any political organization Or any movement.”
Chamisa’s response came at a time when his followers expect the launch of a new opposition political party whose colors will be blue. Newsday
