Six men from Harare have appeared in court after allegedly assaulting a man at the shrine of an apostolic sect.
Emmanuel Ngerazi, Tanyaradzwa Garavane, Kudakwashe Chihambakwe, Kelvin Maferi, Tapiwa Samso and Blessing Mandore appeared before Harare magistrate Len Chichu on charges of assault.
They were held out of jail until March 6 on bail of $20 each.
The accused allegedly assaulted Techavamwe Mudiwa and accused him of theft.
The court heard that on February 25, the six approached Mudiwa while he was at a shrine in Highveld, and demanded that he return their friend’s stolen mobile phone.
Mudiwa denied the allegations and the accused began hitting the complainant several times all over his body with open hands, clenched fists, raised feet and unknown objects.
During the assault, one of the accused, identified as Dennis who is still at large, took Mudiwa’s mobile phone and US$80.
Mudiwa lodged a police report which led to the arrest of the accused and the subsequent recovery of the mobile phone.
Mr. Rufaro Chunzi is on trial.
Meanwhile, four women who allegedly stole lotion at a Spar supermarket at the corner of Fifth Street and Fifth Street appeared before the same judge facing theft charges.
They were arrested after they were seen on the store’s closed circuit television camera committing the crime.
Maria Kativu, Bidamoyo Mbamba, Tariro Manhembi and Olinda Rutendo Chaduka were intercepted by a security guard as they tried to leave the supermarket without paying for six bottles of Nivea Cream that were in Chaduka’s jacket.
The same defendants have a second charge of theft after they used the same modus operandi to shoplift from a Spar supermarket in Hatfield.
In that case, the state alleges the four stole 18 bottles of Jameson whiskey but were caught by security guards while trying to leave the store without paying for the alcohol. Announce
