The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is removing a total of 4 562 dead from the country’s voter lists.

In General Notice No. 193 of 2024 issued in the Extraordinary Government Gazette published on February 9, the CEC Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. Otulwale Siligwana, said the names of persons appearing in the roll will be removed from the voters list unless a notice of appeal is filed. . The process of removing the deceased is considered a continuous process that the Authority has always undertaken when it receives a list of the names of the deceased from the Civil Registry Department.

“It is hereby notified, pursuant to Section 33(4) read with Section 27(1) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13]That the Voter Registration Officers have reason to believe that the persons listed in the First Schedule, who are registered as voters in the constituencies, constituencies and polling stations listed therein, are dead.

“The names of these persons will be removed from the voters list unless a notice of appeal is filed with the Electoral Commission of Zimbabwe,” the notice read.

“By this notice, any First Schedule voter who may be alive is notified to lodge an objection with the Electoral Commission of Zimbabwe. Mahachi Quantum, 1, Nelson Mandela Street, corner of Kaguvi Street and Jason Moyo Street, Harare, and at the respective Regional Commission offices , to have his name included in the First Schedule using the form prescribed in the Second Schedule not later than seven (7) days from the date of publication of this notice.

ZEC regularly and routinely removes deceased voters from the list where data is provided by the Registrar General from the lists of persons who have been certified as deceased.

Regular house cleaning is carried out to ensure that no one can try to vote using the identity details of a deceased person who they may physically resemble, although IDs are supposed to be handed over to the authorities when a death is reported. Chronicle
