WE WILL NOT AMEND THE CONSTITUTION, SAYS ZANU PF newsdzeZimbabweNewsdzeZimbabwe

Zanu PF president and Gutu South lawmaker Buburai Togaribe said the ruling party would use its parliamentary dominance to advance the interests of the people of Zimbabwe.

Zanu PF won all six seats in the by-election held on Saturday last week amid fears that lawmakers will push for constitutional amendments in Parliament.

The party is looking forward to obtaining a two-thirds majority after missing it in the coordinated elections in August 2023.

Togaribe told NewsDay that they will focus on acting and make sure they take their acting role seriously.

“Of course, we are happy with this achievement [attaining
two-thirds majority]. Our majority in Parliament will be used to advance the interests of the people of Zimbabwe. The key areas will be in terms of representation.

“Our members will be encouraged to ensure they carry out their representative role diligently and effectively through robust discussions,” he said.

The by-elections were held on Saturday after the Citizens Alliance for Change, which declared itself interim secretary-general, Sengizo Chabangu, summoned lawmakers who said they were no longer members of the political party.

The by-elections were held in the constituencies of Seki, Goromonzi South, Zvimba East, Pelandaba-Tshabalala, Tshigoto West and Mkoba.

But Togaribe denied allegations that the party wanted to amend the constitution.

There is no such thing, so far there is no such indication from the party or the government. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen if it becomes necessary during our legislative work. He said that Parliament depends on the people it represents to enact laws.

Regarding critics who say that a two-thirds majority will not strengthen democracy, Togaribe said: “Democracy is majority rule. Do these critics want us to donate our seats to the losers so that democracy can be good, and democracy respects the will of the people? Newsday
