An aspiring Zanu PF parliamentary candidate for Masvingo North in the party’s primaries ahead of the general elections scheduled for August 23, 2023, Robert Makhado (49), has been arrested for the murder of his sponsor.
He was remanded in custody until February 7, 2024 by Masvingo Magistrate Isaac Chikura when he appeared in court last week.
Makhado is accused of killing Meshek Senyoro last Tuesday by severely assaulting him because he left his livestock unattended while he was drinking beer.
It is the state’s case that Señoro left the herd unattended and went to drink beer with his co-worker Erikanos Reggie (49) at the Mudavanhu Bottle shop at Autopark Farm under the leadership of Chief Charumbira. Reggie was off duty that day.
Makhado noticed that his herd was not being watched so he followed his employees and found them drinking beer at Mudavanhu Bottle Shop.
He severely assaulted Señoro all over his body. He continued to assault Reggie before Takodzwa Chuma stopped him.
Señoro complained of chest pains on Wednesday morning and told Reggie he wanted to go to the clinic. He was not seen for the rest of the day. His lifeless body was found the next day near an outdoor laundry area.
Reggie reported the matter to Makhado and the latter allegedly ordered him not to disclose the matter to anyone. Reggie ignored the matter and telephoned the police, who came to the scene and arrested Makhado. The body was bruised and was taken to Masvingo Regional Hospital for autopsy.
