A 35-year-old man from King George V1 center in Bulawayo has been sentenced to 6 months in prison for running over and killing a cyclist with his car.
Farai Mabhande pleaded guilty to manslaughter before Bulawayo Magistrate Nomagogo Maphosa.
While pronouncing the sentence, the judge said that the court considered that the accused had confessed to the charge against him, and the first offender should be treated with leniency.
“The court also considered that the perpetrator helped the bereaved family financially. The perpetrator shall be ordered to pay a fine of US$300 payable on or before February 29 or face imprisonment for three months.
The remaining three months of his sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The court heard that on October 19, 2022, at approximately 4 p.m., Mabhande was driving a white Nissan NP200 along a stretch of 12th Avenue without any passengers on board.
The now deceased Joshua Ndlovu, who was riding his bike across the road, was hit by a cyclist and died instantly as a result of the accident.
The accident resulted in damage to the car’s bumper and hood, and the windshield was shattered. The autopsy report stated that the cause of death was hypovolemic shock, pulmonary rupture, and a traffic accident. B metro
