A Harare woman who works as a maid has appeared in court accused of stealing US$20,000 from her employer’s friend’s house.
Cecilia Chirwa, accused of theft, appeared for the first time before Harare Magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo.
She was remanded in custody awaiting bail.
The complainant is Tawanda Gabriel Makota Musva (44 years old).
The State, led by Mr. Zebediah Poffo, alleged that on 9 January, at approximately 8am at Mosva’s residence located at the corner of 3rd and Tongogara Street, Harare, the complainant left his money amounting to US$20,000 placed inside a small bag that was on property which was in a safe. He secured his apartment by closing all the windows, locking all the doors and giving the keys to his girlfriend Sarah Mutsamwira for safekeeping before leaving for Kadoma.
The court heard that on January 11, Mutsamwera gave Chirwa the keys to Mosva’s apartment to go and do some laundry as usual.
Then on January 18, Musva returned from Kadoma and Mutsamwera returned his keys.
When he tried to open the bedroom door, he immediately discovered that it was unlocked.
He checked his things and discovered that his money had been stolen and reported the matter to the police.
It was established that Chirwa was the only person who had access to the apartment by opening the main door and bedroom door using the key.
