Five car thieves have been arrested in separate incidents in Harare for stealing and stealing two cars in Kuwadzana and Chitungwiza.
Of the five, three were arrested in Mofakos while the other two were arrested in the CBD.
The detainees were arrested in Mofakos during the process of stripping the car of its parts.
National Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest.
“ZRP reports that 40-year-old Chigwaza, 28-year-old Johannes Matema and 29-year-old Lincoln Teshona Viru were arrested in connection with a car theft case that took place in Kuwadzana 3 on 23 January 2024, where a Nissan Atlas engine was stolen. Car theft.
He added that the stolen car was tracked and found at the suspect’s residence.
Meanwhile, police also confirmed the arrest of Austin Makalanga (37) and Tapiwa Chikara (29) in connection with a robbery case that occurred on January 23, 2024 at 9pm.
The suspects hired a taxi driver from Chikwanha Shopping Center to Koala Park.
“On arrival at Chinhamu Service Station along Seki Road, the suspects attacked the victim and stole a Hauwei mobile phone and US$10 in cash before extricating the victim from the vehicle, a Toyota Sienta, and driving off.
“The vehicle was traced to the Harare Central Business District where the suspects were later arrested leading to the recovery of the vehicle and mobile phone in Hawaii,” Assistant Comm Nyathi said.
Police are appealing for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects’ accomplice identified only as Kudzi who is being sought in connection with this case.
