A 66-year-old Zvishavane woman has been arrested for murder after drowning her 10-year-old grandson during a suspected cleansing ceremony along the Ngezi River.
Midlands Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said the incident occurred at 16 Rubemba village, Mavala Head, in Zvishavane last Saturday.
“Circumstances indicate that on Saturday at approximately 5pm the suspect, Senzakobi Nyoni (66 years old), was at home with her daughter, Svetokai Muruviri (36 years old) and two juvenile grandchildren. Inspector Mahoko said: “It is alleged that one of the grandchildren fell into a coma and indicated “His little brother, Rubavadzo Tunhai (10 years old), was haunted by evil spirits and needed to be cleansed in water.”
He said that the accused grandmother then took the boy to the Ngezi River, which is about 500 meters from the house, for disinfection, where he subsequently drowned.
“Nyoni then brought home a dead body and the matter was reported to the village chief.
“The village head, Mr Musa Msiba, informed the police who attended the scene which led to the arrest of the elderly woman.” Announce
