Wayne Black earned around $3.2 million from his career as a professional tennis player, where he won all four of the prestigious Grand Slam titles.
The 50-year-old invested part of that money in a five-star bed and breakfast in Harare that looks like something plucked from heaven.
Wayne is a member of the famous Black family that has also produced star players like his brother Byron and sister Cara who have also won major titles on the world stage.
When he retired, Wayne initially settled in England, with his Kazakh wife, Irina Silyutina, who was his sister Kara’s double partner.
However, they became frustrated by the usually miserable cold climate in England and decided to come and settle here in Zimbabwe.
The success of his investment also sends a strong message to other prominent Zimbabwean athletes about the value of investing in this country.
Wayne has enjoyed a fantastic 12-year career since 1994, especially after focusing on doubles.
The young star reached No. 69 in the singles rankings and his best performance at a major was the fourth round of the 1999 Australian Open.
He has won 18 doubles titles – 14 of them with partner and compatriot Kevin Ouellette – and reached world number four in the world rankings.
This includes winning the US Open title in 2001 and then the men’s doubles title at the Australian Open in 2005 alongside Ollet.
Wayne also teamed with his sister Cara to the 2002 French Open and mixed doubles glory at Wimbledon in 2004.
Black hung up his racket in 2006, after making about $3.2 million on the court and investing in his upscale lodge.
